Focus on the Basics to Get Back On Track

On July 10, 2021, I wrote about Wasps of the English rugby premiership. In one game they were not executing on the basics. The story is at the bottom of the page.

Less than a month later, it was a different story.

When elite groups fail, they get back up and work harder. On January 2, 2021, less than one month after they did not look like an elite team, they came back and soundly beat the Exeter Chiefs, reigning Premiership Rugby and European champs at 34 to 5

They didn’t just win, they did better in turnovers: 16 turn overs conceded to 20, 435 to 324 meters run, and they won 90 percent of their lineouts. It was a lost lineout that helped seal their fate in the last game.

They were behind in those stats, they were much closer especially against a better opponent. After the game annalist, Alex Corbiscero said, “It was thoroughly convincing from minute one to the end of the game,” and, “They were winning all the key areas-froward battles-the game line-that allowed them to get their attack going.”

Keep working hard. When you face a setback, focus on the basics.
