The Light in Their Eyes

Remember when you started your job? Remember that feeling of excitement and hope that you were going to make a difference? You may still fell that way.

You may not. You may be burned out. You may be wondering what the hell happened. You may have worked hard but watched promotions and opportunities pass you by. You may have even asked for help and mentorship. You may have even been promised help and mentorship.

You may even have the vague sense that you are not going to get any help or mentorship. That excitement and contentment fade away as those promises are not kept. The promises to help feel empty. The light slowly fades from your eyes as you feel the indifference of the organization settle in.

As a leader, you have a responsibility to build your team. You have a responsibility to keep that light alive in your followers.

What are you doing to train your staff? Have you identified those staff who show promise or desire to do more? Do you subscribe to the minefield training model where you don’t provide training, you simply wait for your followers to make a mistake, then blow up on them?

If these are your tactics, what does that say about the culture of your organization?
